Cabling & WIFI
Voice & Data
Infrastructure is the key to a high performance computer network. At Alternative, we see cabling as fundamental to the technology we all use to create change. From telephone jacks to local area networks, every day our dedicated cabling crews tackle jobs large and small. Alternative Technologies is a state-licensed, bonded and insured “C-7” Low Voltage Systems Contractor registered under the California Department of Consumer Affairs’ Contractors State License Board (license #854541). An organization’s cloud-first approach to office technology must be coupled with total attention to high performance connectivity infrastructure. Cabling is the starting point, not an afterthought.- Install patch panels and switches
- Pull cable for new construction, renovations and tenant improvements
- Add single jacks to existing systems
- Replace existing Cat 3 and Cat 5 with Cat 5e or Cat 6
- Provide feeders and demarc extensions from MPOEs and IDFs
- Fluke testing and certification to official IEEE, ANSI and ISO standards
- Telephone system moves and replacement
- Alarm, key card access and camera system cabling
- Coax, HDMI, A/V cabling (including video conference rooms)
- Multisite connectivity and campus environment wireless
Fiber Optics
When it comes to internet speed, nothing tops the speed of light. High-speed fiber optic internet can open doors and clear pathways for small businesses, nonprofits and professional offices in ways you would not expect. Online training and interviews, video conferencing, telecommuting, and cloud services all become practical and efficient with the fast connections available through fiber optics. If you’re looking to take your team to the cloud, we’ll work with you to choose a carrier that brings the fiber to the building. Then, our technicians can extend the fiber optic cable and connect to the optic network terminal. Our experts can explore ways to make sure that you are actually getting the maximum benefit, speed and power of light.
Server Rooms
Details matter, especially in small spaces. Often too little attention is paid to the server rooms and cabling closets that hold an organization’s vital server and IT equipment. Without adequate space and light, IT staff are constrained in their ability to successfully keep the equipment working in perfect order. Inaccessible tangles of excess cables make it so technicians don’t want to touch anything. Obsolete equipment is abandoned in place. Dust accumulates. Poor design of the IT equipment room creates a degraded maintenance environment with very real and deleterious effects.
Alternative’s infrastructure professionals focus on current requirements and future needs. You can depend on us to be “a voice for the equipment”, advocating for the space, light, power and ventilation that sensitive IT equipment needs – and to recommend the proper cabinet, racks, wire management and patch panels to create a proper working environment for the equipment and the staff that care for it. Contact us to plan the layout for your server room.
Video Conference Rooms
Video conferencing technology is enabling organizations to discover new ways to interview, train and work with clients, customers, funders and coworkers in other locations. With a stable internet connection, the video link gives participants the advantage of nonverbal communication cues, and an easy way to share screens and work together collaboratively. By removing the barriers to meeting in person (scheduling hassle, time and cost of travel), project teams can focus more and move faster on actual project tasks, not the logistics of working together. Wiring Upgrades
Computers and telecommunication services have completely changed our work spaces and the tools we use every day. None of this would be possible without additional changes to the cabling that connects these devices. Yesterday’s copper telephone wires, sufficient for nearly 100 years, simply cannot deliver the data throughput today’s workplace demands.
Our infrastructure team can help you plan the cabling infrastructure for your workplace. We’ll reuse existing cable to the extent possible, and forecast future needs in view of staff usage and patterns. Trust us to take into account aesthetic factors, to be considerate in keeping appointments and minimizing disruption. We test and guarantee all of our work. Contact us when you need to upgrade the cabling infrastructure at your organization.
New Construction
Alternative Technologies works extensively with architects, builders and contractors. Our daily exposure to functional workplace needs provides valuable insight for the design/build process. Our onsite technical crews have a well-deserved reputation for adhering closely to schedules, being completely self-contained, and coordinating cordially (staying out of the way!) of the other trades on the site. Got a set of plans? Contact us to discuss your low-voltage cabling needs.
WiFi Networks
There’s more to connectivity than cabling, and there’s more to WiFi than your wireless access point (WAP). Our technicians can evaluate your site for signal saturation and interference, and locate transmitters to avoid dead zones. We can set up and manage WiFi networks for a multisite, multi-building campus, and provide secure networks segregated for both staff and guests. Contact us to discuss your WiFi needs.

FAQs
We provide quotes for free, and do not charge for site visits necessary to provide quotes. If you need specialized consultation and design help, we can also provide that for a reasonable cost.
We used to have a guy named Sparky who worked with us… just kidding. We are a state-licensed low voltage cabling company. We do not handle 110 or 220 electrical wiring or outlets.
Yes, we can clean up spaghetti! That’s what happens over time in a lot of cabling closets. It’s a problem because messy cabling and poor labeling can lead to neglect (“I ain’t touchin’ it”) and mistakes (“I thought it was plugged in”) and even provide homes for vermin. Tidy cabling closets are part of good technology infrastructure. We can help.
